When the Moji port was opened as the gateway to the trade with the continent in 1889, the Western style buildings such as shipping companies and business firms were built one after another around the port. Now historic buildings have been renovated and restored, including the improvement of the retro promenade. When the retro Moji-ko was opened grandly, the tourists increased by a great number and it became one of the prominent tourist resorts in Kyushu. It was also selected as one of the hundred urban scenic sites by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 1998.
