"The Village of Ishigaki (stone wall)" of Sotodomari District

● Summary  

 

The stone walls were made to protect houses from tidal damages and seasonal winds and the like. On the steep slope facing the inlet, the private houses stretching halfway up the mountain, each house creates its unique appearance with stone walls accumulated neatly to the height of the eaves in order to protect their houses and lives from typhoons and seasonal winds. This village known as “the village of stone walls” for its view is selected as the award of the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in praise of a Japanese beautiful village and also as one of the hundred historic cultural assets of the fishing industry and fishing villages.
