The Kongo-ji temple is the chief temple of Omuro sect of the Shingon. It is said that it was built and opened by Gyoki, a Buddhist priest, in obedience to Emperor Shomu’s command in the Nara era, and afterwards Saint Kobo selected this area as a sacred place to propagate the esoteric Shingon Buddhism. Whereas Koyasan temple was closed to women, they could also worship at Kongo-ji temple which has another name, “Nyonin Koya”(Koya temple opened to women). Buildings of Kondo and Mani-in, Dainichi Buddha, the object of worship, made by Unkei and the Buddha statues of the God of Fire (Fudo-myo-o) and the like, each of which is designated as the important cultural property.
