● Summary |
The Sunpu Castle which Ieyasu Tokugawa ordered feudal lords all over the country to build in 1607 is the clear-cut style and has the threefold moat surrounded by stone walls. And the lively five-layer and seven-story castle tower is arranged northwest of the inner citadel. Almost all the buildings including the castle tower were burnt down by the fire in 1635. Such buildings as towers and gates were rebuilt but the castle tower wasn’t. After World WarⅡ the ruins of the inner citadel and the secondary fortification of the castle were arranged as the Sunpu Park. The Tatsumi Yagura (the southwest watchtower) and the Higashi Gomon (the east gate) were also restored. And they are open to the public.
